Camera Privacy Covers can Break a Laptop's LCD Screen

We have had a couple MacBook Pro laptop screens broken by Camera Privacy Covers Stickers, like the one below.

Image shows camera cover/coin size comparison

We know several hundred of these have been bought by the college to be given away has swag. If you’re using one of these please remove it from your computer. While we have no reports of breaking a Dell laptop's screen, we do not recommend using them because, we have experienced them interfering with the mic’s sound recording quality. Also, the Dell models that we’ve been buying for the last 18-months have built-in privacy cover shutters.

Mac and Surface notebooks have a camera indicator light to let you know when the camera is on. If you feel the need for a cover, based on Apple’s support article, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211148 we recommend using a piece of a Post-it note. Anything greater than the thickness of a piece of paper has a potential to crack your screen. Please take care to cut it small enough to not cover the mics or the ambient light sensors.

Thank you,

OIT
