Security Tips

Password Use

  • Use long passwords that are difficult to guess. Passphrases provide stronger protection than passwords.
  • Include uppercase, lowercase, numbers and symbols where permitted.
  • Do not use the same password for multiple accounts.
  • Avoid keyboard patterns, dictionary words, letter or number sequences or usernames.
  • Do not share your password with others.  (OIT will never ask for your password)
  • Promptly change your password if you suspect it may be compromised.
  • Do not write passwords down.
  • Use a password manager to ensure strong unique passwords for each of your accounts.
  • Do not save passwords to a word document or other unencrypted file.

General PC Tips

  • Always lock your computer when you are away from it
  • Never plug in a USB device you found or was given to you by someone you don’t trust.
  • Never open an email attachment that looks suspicious or was sent from an unknown source.
  • Never use email to send sensitive information.  Email is not encrypted and can often be intercepted and read by other users.
  • Be careful when using public WiFi.  Others may be able to see your internet traffic.
  • Use WPA2 encryption and a strong password on your home WiFi.

SLCC computers

  • DO NOT store PII on your C drive, USB drives, or other portable devices
  • Always back up important files to the H or I drive.  These drives are frequently backed up by OIT.
  • Only install software that is required for college purposes.
  • If your computer is stolen, report it to Campus Police and your supervisor immediately.

Personal Computers

  • Install an anti-virus program, keep it up to date and run regular virus scans.
  • Be sure your computer’s firewall is enabled.
  • Be sure that automatic updates are enabled on both the operating system and on each application.
  • Don’t use the administrator account unless you are adding or removing programs.  Create a non-admin account that you use for day to day activities.
  • Do not save any non-public SLCC data to your personal computer.
  • Use caution when installing applications, and avoid ‘Free Software’ (See our safe download guide)
